Tom Hiney
Conservationist & Field Leader
“Travel reminds us how magnificent the planet is, and how small we are as individuals. Nothing humbles you quite like standing on a ship’s bridge, staring out across an open ocean, or standing atop a volcano surrounded only by primary rainforest.”
Tom is an experienced field guide and expedition leader with a degree in Ecology and Conservation Management. Born and raised in the UK and now based in Australia, he brings a deep knowledge of the natural world, a keen eye for wildlife, and a genuine talent for storytelling and interpretation. Having traveled to every continent and lived on five, Tom has an impressive breadth of experience, although he’s happiest at either end of the spectrum—“the poles or the tropics.”
Some of Tom’s favorite wildlife moments happen in the quietest settings, such as drifting through a landscape by Zodiac with the engine off and simply listening to nature. He has encountered extraordinary wildlife around the world, from gorillas in Uganda and polar bears in the Arctic to birds-of-paradise displaying in Papua New Guinea. What he enjoys most, however, is sharing those experiences with others and helping travelers notice the details that make each encounter special.
When he’s not leading expeditions, Tom enjoys time with his family in Australia and runs SunButter, a reef-safe sunscreen and skincare company. His passion for the natural world also extends to home, where he takes particular pride in watching his daughters develop their own curiosity about wildlife.
