Mark has been leading wildlife and adventure journeys for more than four decades, with a career that has taken him from the Arctic to Antarctica and across Africa, Asia, and South America. A biologist, writer, lecturer, and naturalist, he brings an unusually broad perspective to the places he visits. Born and educated in the UK, Mark has lived in England, Scotland, and New Zealand and is now based in Hokkaido, where he lives within Akan-Mashū National Park.

Mark’s career has spanned conservation biology, university teaching, natural history television, wildlife guiding, and expedition travel. He began leading tours in 1980 and has worked extensively in the expedition cruise industry since 1998, serving as an expedition leader, guide, lecturer, and consultant. He is particularly passionate about helping travelers understand the natural world, connecting wildlife and landscapes with the broader stories of a place.

A prolific writer, Mark has published several hundred articles and more than a dozen books on wildlife and the natural world, including works on the wildlife and birds of Asia and Japan. His deep knowledge, curiosity, and ability to bring a destination to life make him a particularly engaging leader—whether searching for wildlife in the field, exploring a remote landscape, or sharing insights from the deck of an expedition ship.
