Day 1
Buenos Aires, Argentina
Arrive in the vibrant city of Buenos Aires. Embark on guided orientation walk to get acquainted with the city's many charms. In the evening, enjoy a delicious welcome dinner, setting the stage for an exciting journey ahead.
Day 2
Buenos Aires
Spend a full day exploring the rich cultural and historical tapestry of Buenos Aires. We’ll visit some of the city’s most famous neighborhoods and sights including Plaza de Mayo, the political, financial, and religious center of this multicultural nation. This is the oldest public square in Buenos Aires and is flanked by the executive mansion and the President’s Office (Casa Rosada), the former city hall (Cabildo), the National Bank of Argentina, and the Metropolitan Cathedral. After visiting iconic historic sites, indulge in traditional meal featuring steak and local wines, accompanied by a passionate display of tango.
Day 3
Buenos Aires / Puerto Madryn
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for our flight to Puerto Madryn, the capital of Chubut Province and gateway to the Peninsula Valdes, a protected natural area that is home to a variety of whales, dolphins, seals, and seabirds. Check in to Hotel La Posada with free time to relax, or explore this friendly beach town on your own. In the evening, enjoy a typical Argentinian asado dinner at our hotel and a briefing on the wildlife we will see while exploring the Peninsula Valdez.
Day 4
Puerto Madryn / Peninsula Valdez
Embark on a full day of excursions around Peninsula Valdez, guided by a local expert. Embark on a whale watching excrusion from Puerto Piramides where curious southern right whales often come right up to the boat. Then visit the fascinating penguin colony at Estancia San Lorenzo where hundreds of thousands of Magellanic penguins come ashore to breed. After a scenic lunch at the estancia, take a walk to search for marine fossils, pausing to appreciate the amazing vistas of Punta Norte. Check in to a local estancia for dinner and overnight.
Day 5
Peninsula Valdez / Trelew
Start the morning with a walk among elephant seals at Caleta Valdes, a unique and captivating experience. Enjoy a box lunch before departing overland for Trelew. Check in to the Libador Hotel with a chance to freshen up and relax. This evening, visit the Egidio Feruglio Paleontological Museum (MEF), home to the largest known dinosaur in the world, the Patagotitan mayorum, a sauropod from the Titanosaur family, measuring 125 feet long and almost 26 feet high. This is also one of the world’s most complete skeletons. After a quick tour and introduction to the Paleontology program, have a special dinner in the Dinosaur Hall and attend a briefing on the activities planned for our upcoming paleontological adventure.
Day 6
Trelew / Los Altares (Patagonian Paleontology Trail)
After breakfast, depart overland for Los Altares, making a stop at the Florentino Ameghino Dam en route for a walk through the fossils and geological formations in Bryn Gwyn’s Plateau and Ameghino Petrified Forest. After a boxed lunch at Villa Dique Florentino Ameghino, we’ll continue our journey through a supremely scenic area, making multiple stops to appreciate the huge stone cliffs that border the Chubut River. This evening, dine at a local restaurant.
Day 7
Los Altares / Paso del Sapo (Patagonian Paleontology Trail)
This morning, board special vehicles for the drive to Paso del Sapo. Learn about fossils in the Cerro Condor region from the MEF staff, with stops along the way for other educational insights. We will discover unique geological formations, discuss the ancient history of the area and the work being done to excavate fossils and bones from the area. Check in to the Rincon de los Leones Winery for a wine tasting, dinner, and overnight.
Day 8
Paso del Sapo / Gualjaina (Patagonian Paleontology Trail)
Begin the day with a leisurely hike, taking in the natural beauty of the area. Continue to Gualjaina with a stop to visit La Piedra Parada, a colossal rock nearly 780 feet high which resulted from a volcanic eruption 50 million years ago. Go on a hike to view the interesting geological formations and search for fossils. End the day with a wine tasting before dinner and overnight at Mirador Huancache.
Day 9
Gualjaina (Patagonian Paleontology Trail)
Explore the fascinating Cañadon La Buitrera, delving into the region's geological history, a perfect blend of education and nature. As we walk along the sheer 500-foot-walls of the canyon, keep an eye out for rock climbers as well as soaring caracaras and harriers. Enjoy a box lunch amidst the stunning landscapes before returning to Mirador Huancache for dinner and another restful night.
Day 10
Gualjaina / Bariloche
Travel to the picturesque town of Bariloche, surrounded by ancient forests, snow-capped mountain peaks, and crystal-clear lakes. En route, stop for a delightful lunch at El Laberinto in El Hoyo Town. Here we will discover the largest labyrinth in South America, with over 7,000 feet of trails and living fences, only one path leads to the center. Arrive in Bariloche in the early afternoon, where you'll have the freedom to explore at your leisure and discover the town's cultural and culinary offerings.
Day 11
San Carlos de Bariloche
Spend the day on an excursion to Circuito Chico, taking in the breathtaking scenic beauty of the region. Visit Playa Bonita for excellent views of Huemul Island, then head to a viewpoint to take in the sweeping vista of Naheul Huapi and Perito Moreno lakes, the Trebol Lagoon, San Pedro and Llao peninsulas, Victoria Island, and the Bariloche Hills. Make a stop at the lovely Llao Llao Hotel and charming San Eduardo Chapel before crossing the Moreno Lake Bridge and skirting the peaceful Trebol Lagoon. In the afternoon, there will be an opportunity to visit the paleontological museum to view their small, but fine-tuned collection of fossils. The evening is free to enjoy time in the town or relax in the comfort of the hotel.
Day 12
Bariloche
Choose from a variety of optional activities today. Explore this diverse landscape by horseback, a variety of trails are available for all skill levels and tours can be tailored to individual interests. Or embark on a scenic cruise to Victoria Island for a walk through the Arrayan Forest. These rare trees are members of the myrtle family and are notable for their cinnamon-colored trunks and fragrant flowers. Conclude your journey with a memorable farewell dinner, celebrating our shared experiences.
Day 13
Depart Bariloche
After breakfast, transfer to the airport to begin your independent journey home. This final day marks the end of a memorable journey, leaving you with lasting memories.
